VIRGIN RECORDS FAQS The Virgin Records story began in the early 1970's, when company founder Richard Branson first sold albums through a modest London mail-order operation. Choosing the name Virgin for his fledgling firm, maverick entrepreneur Branson soon began pressing and releasing albums on his own Virgin Records imprint. Launched in September 1986, Virgin Records America ushered in a new chapter of the Virgin saga. In June 1992, Britain's Thorn EMl purchased the Virgin Music Group and its worldwide subsidiaries, throughout the label's long-standing reputation for creativity and quality has remained unchanged.
