Without a doubt, the D'ni civilization was one of the greatest, most advanced ever to have thrived on this small planet - some would argue it was the greatest. But the fact that we had no knowledge of their existence until the early 1980's is perhaps more astonishing than the tangled story of their past, and the vast complexities of their ancient society.

So how could the evidence of such a society remain utterly hidden from the modern world for so long? The explanation is almost laughably simple; thousands of feet of rock separated us from them. The D'ni were cave dwellers, building their great cities in mammoth caverns deep below our feet. We carried on with our own existence, oblivious to their existence, their struggles, and their eventual disappearance.

The remains of D'ni are overwhelming. With most archealogical finds we struggle to make sense of some tiny fragment of pottery, or a piece of torn cloth. With the D'ni site, the opposite is true. Simply put, we have too much!

Still, of everything yet discovered, the writings of Atrus are the most intriguing. His stories told, through a series of journals, would later become the basis of the worlds of MYST and RIVEN.
